BBC News. Somali environmentalist Ahmed Ibrahim Awale hopes it will inspire African researchers. The information minister for the breakaway state of Somaliland has tested positive for Covid amid concerns of a second wave of infections. The minister, Suleiman Ali, who was on a peace and mediation tour in Sool area said he was feeling okay.

Mr Ali said he would go into isolation and continue discharging his duties. He warned that coronavirus was still a risk and that people should follow guidelines put in place to prevent its spread. Somaliland is in dispute with the neighbouring semi-autonomous Somali region of Puntland over the Sanaag and Sool areas, some of whose inhabitants owe their allegiance to Puntland.

The self-declared republic of Somaliland has opened a representative office in Taiwan. Taiwan opened its own office in Hargeisa on 17 August. The two breakaway regions announced diplomatic relations in July, shrugging off furious protests from both China and Somalia. China views Taiwan as its own territory and has vowed to one day seize it, by force if needed.

Only 15 countries diplomatically recognise Taiwan over Beijing, although many nations maintain embassy equivalent trade offices in Taipei. In Africa, only Eswatini has diplomatic ties with Taiwan. Somaliland declared independence from Somalia during the civil war and compared to the southern regions it has thrived and has become a beacon of stability. While some countries maintain informal ties with the breakaway region, Somaliland is not diplomatically recognised by any other nation. Both China and the Somali government in Mogadishu have condemned the move which was announced at the beginning of the month. This was rejected by the government in Mogadishu and Somaliland has not been internationally recognised. The narrative follows the maps, observing the Greek system of the Seven Climates that start from the Equator and rise to the Northern Polar Circle. It is original and unique in the type and amount of detail for the period and the region, describing the cities and towns of Southern Arabia, local dynasties, and social mores. There are even some city maps, but the book does not easily fit the established genres either in history or geography.

While it draws on some literary resources, the book does not appear either to build on prior geographical treatises or to be widely cited in later works. In tracing the lines of transmission of knowledge, Ibn al-Mujawir stands somewhat isolated, egardless of the original and valuable information he presents. On occasion he cites a verse or a foreign word, repeats a story of a saint or relates the information told him in the many audiences he attended at various courts.

He started his journeys with a pilgrimage to Mecca and then never ceased to miove from place to place, eventually returning to his homeland of Morocco. His secretary-editor may have added to his stories excerpts from the records of an earlier pilgrim and traveler such as Ibn Jubayr 12th century , but there are no quotes from learned treatises or encyclopedic disctionaries. Ibn Battuta was a passenger on ships piloted by someone else, and his concerns were about his safety, comfort, secruity for his belongings and his entourage, and getting to the destination.

He names quite a few types of ship and survives more than one storm, but he knows nothing about navigation or shipping except for the dictate of the monsoon and the danger of piracy. His reputation for knowledge, skill and expertise rests on his role as a teacher of naval arts for he has left an exceptionally rich heritage of written works, including a nautical encyclopedia and a number of didactic compositions and sailing instructions for certain oceanic routes.

He authored a total of about forty works in prose and verse, of which more than 20 have survived. His work looks all the more original that there is nothing to compare it with among the earlier known works. The training of pilots and ship masters was a matter of oral instruction and constant practice. The orality is confirmed by the choice of verse form, in the easy rajaz metre for easier memorization, for the sailing instructions. In New York, Jason Jeremias, an activist and theatre producer who had struck up a friendship with Sahra during workshops in Uganda, learned of the attack, and started to look at ways of getting the rapper out of the East African country.

In her room, Sahra — who had discovered her apparent fate from her young cousin — was sunk in despair. She was told to prepare for a journey to her home village the following day after Friday prayers. She believed — as did those on the outside — that she was being taken to her death. Unknown to Sahra, her friends were finalising an escape plan, brought forward from Saturday to Friday. They got word to her, telling her to look for the family friend from her window while the men were at prayers.

A car then took her to a rendezvous point with the people — who cannot be named for security reasons — who would eventually get her out of the country. She escaped probable death with only hours to spare.
