The cost by plane if you book ahead will be lower than this and less than 4 hours. If you wanted to go only by bus you could stop in Belo Horizonte and Brasilia.

You may stop at Brasilia and head to Chapada dos Veadeiros. Lots of hiking possibilities there. The thing is we have about a week to get to Belem and so far Belem itself hasn't been that impressive.
So we figured by bus we'll be able to see a few more places and it includes a few night's accommodation. But thank you so much for the help think we might consider going to Brasilia and then Belem. Is possible to do Chapada dos Veadeiros as a day outing from Brasilia?? You'd spend a lot of time in transportation.

Chapada dos Veadeiros has a bunch of waterfalls and hiking trails to spend a single day there. Belem is one of my favourite cities though most people don't seem to rate it. The Estacao das Docas revitalised docklands is a beautiful place to hang out, the Ver-o-Peso market delightfully gritty, Mangal das Garcas bird and butterfly sanctuary is delightful as the creatures are so tame.
Of all the times I have visited Belem, I have only once seen a couple of gringos, so a little basic Portuguese goes a long way. The people are very charming and helpful and it is quite an easy city to navigate. There's some lovely hotels and hostels probably your main expense there.
It is a beautiful city where people wear their hearts on their sleeves and bargaining in the market streets starts at 1 real. Brazil city-dwellers poo-poo it for its simplicity, its Brega music or tell you it is dangerous.
There is a great nightclub not far from the airport enormous that hosts about 6 different bands on a weekend and you can drink and dance till about 5am. There's also a dance style most Brazilians don't know, or claim doesn't exist, called Calypso which is only danced in Para Belem State it is not the calypso of other countries though I'm sure someone who hasn't been there will tell you differently!
Dance lessons are not expensive.
One of the most fun highlights is the protected Amazon forest area on the edge of Belem. Order of Cultural Merit Brazil.
