I'm not qualified to evaluate this book for what it is--an anthropological account of Brazilian male prostitution industry and its gay tourist customers-- but I really enjoyed this book as a novelistic, unromantic take on the subject. It is not written to be sexy, and the author genuinely doesn't seem to have much if any erotic interest in the people he's studying. Yet he sympathizes with his subjects, and often gets fascinating stories out of them about their daily life.
There's a Brechtian quality to the discussion of the strategies they engage in to get business -- as if they were lawyers or consultants trying to get a new client. It's also interesting to hear about the sex tourists, who often seem hilariously gullible or lost in motivated reasoning. For example, some of the gay tourists think the male prostitutes they sleep with who claim to be straight are actually closeted gay men, and by having sex with them, the tourists are somehow helping the prostitutes come to terms with being gay.
Though this is a thoroughly researched work based on facts, I'd recommend this to anyone with an interest in queer fiction. I truly enjoyed the eye opening explanations into the differences between American and Brazilian held view points on homosexuality and race.
